Beneath

Posted on May 5th, 2008 by OK : Ready OK

I live near/among a forest of very tall trees (douglas fir, cedar, hemlock)

where I walk most evenings. Many species of ferns live in the shadows under these trees which in this season are all in the process of slowly unrolling and opening their various shaped fronds, each species with it's own unique gesture. Exquisite gestures of perfect grace performed in absolute stillness. This expression of stillness unfolding, at each point complete.

I share this with them. I too have roots sunk deep into that silent dark life giving loam beneath. In fact what I am is down there unseen. What the world sees as me is just the 'fruiting body' one might say, a gesture. This stillness is mine.

tress are earth's companions, our friends and protectors.  They take the light of the sun, and gift life to the rest of this planet.  Let us be grateful for that.

OK, I loved your meditation. “”The fruiting body'” reminded me of an interview I read in The Sun Magazine. Paul Stamets was the subject. He wrote a book, Mycelium Running: How mushrooms can help save the world.  Another author, Derrick Jensen, interviewed him. What we see on the forest floor, fungi of endless varieties, is only the fruit of the mycelia, an underground root fiber like organism covering acres, a vast network that apparently operates very much like our brains, using the same chemical neuro-transmitters. Down there in the dark earth is another kind of internet. Amazing.
